Alstom has signed a EUR 101M contract with the Santo Domingo Transport Reordering Office for the supply of eight three-car metro trains that are needed to serve line 2C metro extension, 7.3km from Maria Montez to Los Alcarrizos, with 900m in subway and the remainder elevated. The system will include five new stations.

The new trains will be built in Barcelona and the Alstom Santa Perpetual factory. Finance is coming from the Central American Bank of Economic Integration, which is also contributing USD 250M towards the contraction of the new section of metro.

Santo Domingo (population 2.2M) is the capital of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Construction on the first 14.5km metro line first took place in 2005-2008, with revenue service starting on 6 January 2009. Later that year work started to build line 2, and the 10.3km subway saw revenue service started on 7 April 2013.

An eastern extension opened in August 2018 and the western extension will open in 2025.
